He lived with his son, John in Lafayette, GA after the death of his wife. He is buried at the foot of Pigeon Mountain. He was also known as John McWhorter of Cane Creek.

John McWhorter (1768-1855) by George Turberville McWhorter, Jr.

"John McWhorter, eldest child of David and Mary Posten McWhirter, was born in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, on 30 Oct 1768. Like his father, he followed in the blacksmith trade. In 1795, he moved to Cane Creek in the Abbeville District of South Carolina where he married Miss Elizabeth Willson (called Anderson). Elizabeth was the third child of James Willson and his wife Martha Calhoun. She was five years of age when her father was killed at the Battle of Cowpens on 17 Jan 1781. Her mother was the daughter of James Calhoun, Sr. And a first cousin of John C. Calhoun. Four years after the death of her husband, Martha Willson married William Anderson (whose surname was adopted by her four children).

"The true facts of Elizabeth's real parentage have only recently come to light, through the research of a descendant, Mrs. Shelly McWhorter Wright. At an unspecified date in their marriage, it was learned that William Anderson had a former wife, still living, from whom he had not been legally divorced, so Martha left him. In 1831 (at the age of 80), she petitioned for reinstatement of pension as the lawful widow of James Willson. Her case was complex, since she applied for retroactive annuities covering a forty-year span (1735-1825), pleading a victim of duplicity and ill health, poverty & sufferance, as well as having been robbed by the Tories of her property and her slaves. She was ultimately denied retroactive annuities, but reinstated by approval of the State Legislature, House & Senate, for current annuities effective December, 1824. Since her petition makes for interesting reading, a copy is appended to this section of the genealogy.

"John and Elizabeth (Willson) McWhorter settled on a land grant of one thousand acres at Pickens (now Oconee County) South Carolina, in 1805. In that year, John became a charter member and Co.-founder of the historic Bethel Presbyterian Church above Walhalla. He subsequently became a ruling Elder and Clerk of Session. Elizabeth died on July 10, 1840, and was buried in the Bethel Church Cemetery where her grave marker still stands. John moved to Walker County, Georgia, following his wife's death, and died there on February 19, 1855, where he was buried at Fairview Cemetery (five miles south of Lafayette, at the foot of Pigeon Mountain)."

Miss Margaret was born March 7, 1809 and died March 6, 1898 at their home, Bachelor's Retreat (near present site of Clemson University), Pickens District, South Carolina.

"For many years, Rev. McWhorter preached in the counties of Laurens, Abbeville, Anderson, Oconee, Pickens and Greenville. He taught Classics at private academies and at Erskin College. He was Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church at Philadelphia in 1841. He was a staunch supporter of the Confederate cause and gave three of his sons to the Confederate Army…one of whom, Captain John Samuel McWhorter, was killed at the battle of Franklin, Tennessee, at the age of 18. He also performed the duties of Chaplain to the Confederate soldiers stationed at Charleston, South Carolina. He died on February 9, 1884 at Bachelor's Retreat, Pickens District, South Carolina."

Death of Rev. William McWhorter

"Rev. Wm. McWhorter, a highly esteemed minister of the Presbyterian Church, died at his residence at Bachelor's Retreat on Saturday morning at 2 o'clock A.M., at the advanced age of seventy-three years. He had been afflicted for several weeks and confined to his bed from softening of the brain and partial paralysis. While his death was not unexpected, still we, who had known him so long and so intimately as our instructor, both mentally and morally, of the young, as a pure Christian, an upright gentleman and accomplished scholar, cannot but feel that the county, the State and the church have lost a worthy citizen, friend and Christian scholar. He had been spared to a good old age, and was living on borrowed time, but up to a few months prior to his death he devoted that time to active work in the vineyard of his Lord. His virtues were no less conspicuous in the family circle than his high calling of the ministry and he brought up his children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Of his sons, two were promising physicians in Virginia, where they married and settled, while a third lost his life in the battle of Franklin, Tennessee, in the cause of patriotism and duty to his country. He also leaves one daughter, married and settled in Abbeville County, and one who remains a companion to his aged widow. Mr. McWhorter was born within a few miles of the present site of Wahalla. He managed to get sufficient education to enter the University of Georgia and after taking his course there, he studied for, and entered the ministry, in which he labored through life. He first married and settled in Abbeville, but our first recollection of him was when he moved to Old Pickens Court House over 30 years ago and opened a high school. He continued to preach and teach in different parts of the county until he finally settled at Retreat and gave his whole time to the ministry. There his body was laid to rest last Sabbath in the presence of a large assembly of friends and acquaintances. There remaineth a rest to the people of God, and those who knew Mr. McWhorter feel sure his soul has entered that rest, where he daily reaps the reward of the godly."

Another Great and Good Man Has Passed Away Westminster, SC, 12 Feb 1884

"Dear Courier: The Rev. William McWhorter, long and favorably known to the people of this county, died at his home at Bachelor's Retreat on Saturday, the 9th instant, at 2 o'clock A.M. He was nearly 73 years old and had been slowly declining for several months, though he was confined to his room for only about nine weeks. Some seven or eight days before his death he became partially paralyzed and remained speechless until the end. His remains were interred in the Presbyterian churchyard at Bachelor's Retreat on Sunday, the 10th. Rev. H. Strong, of Wahalla, preached a most elegant and impressive funeral sermon, replete with beautiful thoughts, commemorative of the piety and devotion of the dead, and abounding in solemn warning to the living. There was a sad coincidence in the fact that the funeral sermon was preached from the same text that Mr. McWhorter, himself, had used some three months ago, when he preached for the last time in the Retreat Church. The text was Psalm 23:4: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Notwithstanding the inclement weather of the day, and the almost impassable condition of the roads, a very large crowd assembled at his burial to do honor to his memory.

"Mr. McWhorter was distinguished alike as a preacher and as a citizen. In his devotion to duty, in his uncompromising integrity, and in his unwavering adherence to what he conceived to be right, he has left an example worthy of imitation for all coming time. He may be said to have been a pioneer of Presbyterianism in this county. In this connection, our memory runs far back into the days of childhood, when he saw him as our first preacher, and heard from his lips our first sermon. The words of the text from which he preached, at the time, became indelibly impressed upon our memory and remain fresh even to the present moment: 'Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might, for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave whither thou goest.'

"He leaves a wife and one unmarried daughter at home; a married daughter in Abbeville county, in this State, and two sons in The State of Virginia. In this sad bereavement they will have the sympathies of many friends throughout the State. To the bereaved family, there is also consolation, that he has left behind him the memory of a noble life, spent for the good of his fellow man, while his spirit has gone to enjoy that "rest that remaineth for the people of God." (Copied from the Wahalla Courier)

William David McWhorter (1838-1895) by George Turberville McWhorter, Jr.

"William David, eldest child of the Rev. William and Margaret M. Kyle McWhorter, was born December 27, 1838 at his mother's home in Pontotoc, Mississippi. (Margaret had wanted her first child to be born there.) He grew up at Bachelor's Retreat in Pickens District (now Oconee County), South Carolina. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1860 (the diploma was signed by Jefferson Davis). In 1861 he enlisted in the C.S. Army as a surgeon to Company A, First South Carolina Rifles, commanded by Captain (later Colonel) William Livingston. Soon after, at Sandy Springs (Anderson County, SC) he was detailed by Colonel James L. Orr to the Medical Staff of his regiment ("Orr's Rifles") for the duration of the war.

"He was married at The Hermitage in Fairfax County, Virginia, on the morning of November 27, 1866, to Miss Mary Jones Millan, daughter of George Washington Millan, Chief Justice of Fairfax County, and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Jones (Lee) Millan. The Rev. E. T. Perkins performed the ceremony. (Theirs was a celebrated love affair, and their letters during the latter part of the Civil War have been preserved.) [Note: These letters were given to me by my Uncle George McWhorter, Jr., writer of this particular portion of my book]. Family tradition asserts that William David and his younger brother, James Kyle, were campaigning in Fairfax County during the war and spotted two pretty girls seated on a swing on the front porch of The Hermitage, their pug noses showing coyly beneath their bonnets. The brothers vowed to return after the war to marry them. They did. [Note: Upon reading the manner letters in my possession written by James Kyle McWhorter, MD to his parents, it is clear that he was not interested in Virginia Millan initially, but was engaged to Hattie Lee Turberville who lived nearby in Fairfax Co., VA, whom he met after the war, when he settled at Fairfax Courthouse with his brother, William David McWhorter, MD.]. Mary's sister, Virginia Lee Millan, became the wife of Dr. James Kyle McWhorter on June 16, 1869 (also at The Hermitage) shortly after he had received his medical degree from the University of Georgia.

"Miss Mary Jones Millan was born March 19, 1844 at The Hermitage (home of her maternal grandfather, Thomas William Lee) in Fairfax County, Virginia. She died on March 5, 1895 in Washington, DC, [Note: In Henriques' book about the Fairfax Medical Society, he claims that Mary died from cancer] less than two weeks after the death of her husband. According to a surviving granddaughter (Mary Louise Cockerille Buynitzky), the couple died in penury, his medical fees having been paid in "pigs & chickens" instead of cold cash, with no attempt on the part of the good natured doctor to collect outstanding debts. (No obituary has yet come to light, although I have written to the Virginia Medical Society, founded by Dr. W. McWhorter, for information).

"Dr. McWhorter's medical practice was confined chiefly to Fairfax County and Washington, DC. When and epidemic of diphtheria broke out in Fairfax, he was credited with saving many infant lives by publishing his famous "prescription" in the Fairfax Newspapers. He died in Washington, DC on February 20, 1895. He and his wife were buried at the Old Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC."
